Public Observations II 2010

Filmed at the Ōtāra Flea Market,Ōtāra, Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Public Observations II explores the unconscious community protocols that govern bodies in public. The quietly disobedient performance is staged in a busy aisle of the Otara Market. Filmed at a low angle, the work captures Leatinu’u sitting cross-legged on the ground for seven minutes. Unaware of the presence of the camera the public negotiate Leatinu’u’s unconventional presence by moving around him. Although largely ignored and bypassed, a few people exhibit disapproval through gestures or muttered utterances. Staging breaches of public protocol renders visible the ways in which a simple action can isolate an individual from a community.
